Welcome to the web site of Wooden Specs Studio–where you can learn about
the wooden
eyeglass frames that I craft by hand at my studio in downtown Indianapolis.
Why wooden frames? One could start to answer that question by asking why people choose wood for anything? For furniture? For floors? For fine writing pens or accent items around the house? There is something about the beauty of wood that draws us to it, isn’t there? And if it is possible to have such beauty in an item we wear every day, then why wouldn’t we use such a material? The idea in establishing Wooden Specs Studio was to make such eyeglass frames available for people to enjoy!
I am presenting my frames as an item of ‘wood art’–a kind of ‘applied art’ or ‘fine
craft’. As with a piece of handmade furniture or a ceramic vase (other forms of
‘applied art’), these spectacle frames are intended to serve a purpose. To that
end, I have devoted significant time to ensuring that they can fulfill their purpose
for people in their everyday lives. Wood, while beautiful, does not have as many
"forgiving" properties as typical metal or plastic frames, so the frames require
a degree of care, but I think that most people will find them reasonably trouble
free. I wear mine as around-
Take the Guided Tour to learn about various aspects of the frames. Then view images of a range of frames in the Gallery. If you love them (and I hope you do), you can order a pair on my "Frames in Stock" page or my "Order a Frame to be Made For You" page. I hope you love them as much as I do. And if you love them, please consider buying a pair!
